On January 27, 1850, Samuel Gompers was born. Gompers is responsible for organizing the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1886 and serving as its president (except for in 1895) until he passed away in 1924. As an advocate for craft and trade workers' rights, the AFL fought for better working conditions, higher wages, collective bargaining rights, and shorter work days.
