Have you ever wondered what some of the tiny creatures that live buried in the sand are? Some of them are called Variable Coquinas! The Variable Coquina is a small, filter feeding bivalve that is commonly found on Sanibel beaches. Their shells come in a variety of colors, and beachgoers often see them use their foot to bury in the sand after a wave crashes on the beach. Next time you’re at the beach, look closely at the sand to see if you can find any Variable Coquinas! Learn more about the Vari

Tons of OBX Coquinas! These colorful little clams are very active; they migrate up and down wave-washed shore with the tide and can reburrow between each wave. They used to be highly prized for food. The tiny clams were collected in huge numbers and boiled, the resulting broth was strained off and used as the base for seafood soups | Wild OBX

I am so excited to show you all these coquina clams! I used to dig up clams like this on the beach all of the time when I was a kid and I had no idea they were edible. They might be small but these clams have a ton of flavor. The flavor is salty and reminds me more of mussels than clams. They are really easy to make I tossed then in butter, garlic, shallots, and white wine until the shells opened up. I really wanted to go for a clam chowder type of vibe for this dish. Instead of potatoes though I

One of the critters most likely to be encountered by summer beachgoers is the coquina clam Donax variabilis. These tiny bivalves are common but patchy residents of ocean beaches from New York to Texas. A sign of healthy waters, they filter plankton and other small organisms from the surf zone, and are an important food source for shorebirds and some fishes. | Virginia Institute of Marine Science

Perched high above Simi Valley, this abandoned steam shovel worked the Coquina Mine from 1929 to 1935 for the Tapo Alto Shell & Fertilizer Co. Instead of striking gold, crews crushed ancient seashell limestone into poultry grit and cattle feed (‘oyster shell meal’), turned it into agricultural lime, and even fed local road building—until the machine itself was left stranded where it last worked. | SoCal Outdoor Explorer

Nick Davis on Instagram: "Oh to be a tiny colorful shelled clam 🐚✨ You might notice those little tubes coming from the shell of these tiny coquina clams. Those are their siphons! They have an incurrent siphon that brings water and food particles in, and have an excurrent siphon that helps get rid of waste! 🐚✨ #coquina #clam #shell #beach #mollusk #animals #marinelife #ocean #marinebiology #nature #wildlife #sea #aquatic #bivalves"
