The character was created by Jack Kirby and first appeared in the comic book Fantastic Four #48, published in 1966.

By boosting himself with the ambient cosmic energy, Silver Surfer is capable to destroy a galaxy, and since he scales directly to Thor, the Surfer potentially could even destroy a large fragment of Eternity, and thus multiple galaxies.
