Grocery workers are stuck watching the cases unfold as the retailers battle regulators in three separate court cases.

Attorneys for the state and for the Kroger and Albertsons supermarket chains wrapped up a trial Thursday over the companies’ proposed $24.6 billion merger by disparaging each other’s expert witnesses and accusing the other of pushing an agenda that will harm Colorado shoppers and workers.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser is suing to block the $25 billion merger on the grounds it will raise prices and be bad for shoppers. Kroger and Albertsons argue the merger is necessary to compete with the likes of Amazon, Walmart and Costco.

The trial in the merger of Kroger and Albertsons has wrapped up after three weeks of hearings in King County Superior Court.

Two Kroger executives took the stand Monday in Denver District Court saying a merger with Albertsons is the key to competing with Walmart.

The state attorney general sued in February to block Kroger’s proposed $24.6 billion purchase of Albertsons that would merge two of the state’s largest grocers.
