The European Union has restarted its civilian mission to monitor the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt at Rafah, a key entry and exit point for the Palestinian territory, the bloc's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Friday.

CAIRO -- Patients from the Gaza Strip entered Egypt on Saturday through the Rafah crossing, the only link between Egypt and the Palestinian enclave, Egypt's state-run Nile TV reported. They are the first group of Gazan patients entering Egypt for medical treatment via the crossing since May last year.

The Rafah crossing has been shuttered for over eight months but is opening again as part of the cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

A group of 50 sick and injured Palestinian children began crossing to Egypt for treatment through Gaza's Rafah crossing on Saturday (February 1, 2025), in the first opening of the border since Israel captured it nearly nine months ago.
