Islanders rookie Maxim Tsyplakov had a target on his back after delivering a hard shoulder check on Poehling, who left the game.

On Friday, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced it has suspended New York Islanders forward Max Tsyplakov for three games for his illegal check to the head of Flyers forward Ryan Poehling on Thursday night. The third game of his suspension is a rematch between the Flyers and Islanders at UBS Arena.

While the New York Islanders and the NHL thought Tsyplakov's hit was clean, the Philadelphia Flyers certainly disagreed.

After administering a direct shot to the head of Philadelphia Flyers center Ryan Poehling, New York Islanders forward Maxim Tsyplakov is scheduled for a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday.

The Flyers had an excellent response to a scary hit on Ryan Poehling as they took over to beat the Islanders, 5-3, Thursday night at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. Poehling was forced out of the game in the first period after taking a check to the area of his shoulder and head.

Sean Couturier had a goal and an assist, Travis Konecny added three assists and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Islanders 5-3 on Thursday night. Morgan Frost, Garnet Hathaway, Cam York and Noah Cates also scored for Philadelphia. Samuel Ersson made 26 saves as the Flyers won for the third time in four games.

Joel Farabee had two assists, and Samuel Ersson made 26 saves for the Flyers (20-20-6), who extended their point streak to four games (3-0-1). Farabee was a healthy scratch for each of the previous three games.

The Flyers held the Devils to a season-low 14 shots. New Jersey’s previous low was 16 shots against Edmonton in a 3-0 win back on Nov. 4. It was also a season low for shots allowed by the Flyers this season. Their previous low was 17 vs. Toronto.

NEWARK, N.J. — The Flyers won a defensive grind over the Devils, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the Prudential Center. Matvei Michkov and Bobby Brink provided the Flyers' first two goals. Brink's came in the third period on the power play to give the Flyers the lead. Noah Cates and Tyson Foerster had assists on the marker.

Ersson did allow a goal less than 5 minutes into the third period but Jesper Bratt, the goal scorer, was offside on his give-and-go with Ondřej Palát. The play was overturned on a coach’s challenge, giving John Tortorella and his staff an impressive 4-1 record.

John Tortorella's Philadelphia Flyers (20-20-6) are in Newark on Saturday afternoon to take on Sheldon Keefe's New Jersey Devils (26-15-6).
