Ireland has upgraded its weather warning amid an “extremely cold” snap across the island. Temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as minus 8C while a Status Orange low temperature and ice warning was announced for almost all of the Republic of Ireland.

Further snow has been forecast for Northern Ireland this weekend. It comes as a weather alert for ice in Co Down, Co Antrim, Co Derry and Co Tyrone is in place until 10am on Saturday, January 4. The Met Office warning said: "Icy surfaces leading to difficult travel conditions.

There may be some disruption due to icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.
