Nigeria's former President Muhammad Buhari was buried on Tuesday in the backyard of his home in northern Katsina state, as residents climbed trees to bid farewell to the 82-year-old. Buhari ruled Africa's most populous nation between 2015 and 2023 and died in a London hospital on Sunday after an undisclosed illness.

Nigeria's former President Muhammadu Buhari has been buried at his home in northern Nigeria two days after his death at the age of 82 at a clinic in London. His body was flown back to the country earlier on Tuesday and his successor, Bola Tinubu, was at the airport in Katsina state to receive the remains.

But Nigeria refused to bend to Mr Buhari’s will. Almost 500 politicians and businessmen were arrested for corruption and sent to jail by military tribunals. A new currency was issued to flush out the stashes piled floor to ceiling in the homes of the elite. For many military men this purge was too close for comfort—and too uncompromising.
