Winter grabbing Texas by scruff this weekend with snow in parts of state
It really hasn’t felt like winter in Texas lately, but that will change in a big way starting this weekend with snow possible in parts of the Lone Star State.
The Texas Panhandle is set to see the first of this frigid air blowing in from the north. By Thursday night, January 8, snow is slated to start blanketing the region. Through the next 24 hours, icy flakes will continue to fall as temperatures plummet to well below freezing.
Isolated severe storms are possible late Wednesday through Friday, with large hail, strong winds and an isolated tornado possible.
Many Texas cities have seen less than a half-inch of rainfall this winter, causing extreme drought to expand rapidly across the state.
The map included with the update showed a 60 to 90 percent chance of at least 1 inch of snow in parts of Texas, specifically Stratford. Perryton, Gruver, and Dalhart had a 30 to 60 percent chance, with Amarillo and surrounding areas having a 10 to 30 percent chance.
With La Niña in place, snow is even less likely in South Texas this year, but history shows significant winter storms still occur from time to time.
