Canada’s “brutal” jobs report for February has most economists betting interest rates aren’t going anywhere this year, but a cut would be the more likely move if there is any change.

Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) economist Claire Fan notes that February’s Canadian labour market data were weak, with employment falling and the unemployment rate rising to 6.7% as participation declined.

B.C.’s labour market continues to sputter in 2026. After tepid growth of 3,500 jobs in January, the province followed up with the loss of 20,200 jobs in February, according to Statistics Canada data released Friday.

That’s a median base salary of $152,000 for women, compared to $194,500 for men. Men are more likely to earn bonuses, and their median bonus is $15,000 higher than that of women. When it comes to employee ownership, women also miss out: only 46 percent of women employees hold equity in their companies, compared to 54 percent of men.
