SEATTLE — Sounders FC lost to the reigning South American champion, Botafogo, in its first match of the Club World Cup on Sunday night at Lumen Field. Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus scored for Botafogo in the first half.

Brazilian and South American champions Botafogo began their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over MLS side Seattle Sounders in a Group B encounter at Lumen Field on Sunday.First-half headers from Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus gave the visitors a comfortable lead and only several fine saves by Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei prevented them from extending it.

More than 1,000 fans showed up on the waterfront to set a Guinness record for most people receiving a soccer lesson prior to the Sounders-Botafogo match.
