Qualcomm just launched the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip for smartphones today, but the second-generation Oryon CPU core within could hint at a possible new Snapdragon X Elite chip.

Qualcomm has a new chip for flagship phones, and the best part is that it uses an improved version of the Oryon CPU architecture that the Snapdragon X Elite chips brought to Windows PCs earlier this year.

The Oryon CPU inside the 8 Elite hasn’t been borrowed directly from the laptop chips; Qualcomm is calling it a second-gen chipset. It replaces the Kryo CPUs Qualcomm has used in previous mobile chipsets and comprises two prime cores with six performance cores.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite brings more than just a naming convention change. There’s a lot to look forward to on the upcoming phones from OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, and more.

Qualcomm has finally unveiled its flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite aka Gen 4 processor. It brings the powerful 2nd-gen Oryon CPU, clocked up to 4.32GHz.

Qualcomm’s new chip features new architecture for both its Prime and Performance CPU cores: the Snapdragon 8 Elite has two Prime CPU cores with support for speeds up to 4.32 GHz and six Performance cores that top out at 3.53 GHz. The company is also promising gains in graphics and AI performance.
