SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Flash floods caused by torrential rains in a remote village in Indian-controlled Kashmir have left at least 37 people dead, authorities said Thursday, as rescue teams scouring the devastated Himalayan village brought at least 150 people to safety.
A t least 60 people have been killed and dozens are still missing after flash floods hit a village hosting Hindu pilgrims in Indian-administered Kashmir. More than 100 people have been injured, said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah while addressing an Independence Day function in capital Srinagar.
Flash floods in Kishtwar caused damage to at least 16 residential houses and government buildings, three temples, four water mills, a 30-meter-long bridge.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday took stock of the rescue and relief operations in the cloudburst-hit Kishtwar district and said he will ensure reconstruction of homes damaged in flash floods.
According to media reports, the Jasnai nullah at the Chasoti village is a key stop on the pilgrimage, where langar, community kitchen, are set up for the pilgrims of the Hindu shrine.
Kishtwar flash floods swept away a makeshift market, a security outpost, 16 houses, government buildings, 3 temples, a 30m bridge, and over a dozen vehicles.
