Huge waves were seen reaching the coastline of Hokkaido in Japan on Wednesday (July 30) after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.

A tsunami has hit coastal areas of Russia’s Kuril Islands and Japan’s large northern island of Hokkaido after a powerful, 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia early Wednesday.

A tsunami advisory was also issued for parts of Alaska and the entire West Coast after a powerful earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
