Police say a woman has died in an outdoor fire at an encampment in Millbury and crews are still fighting a large overnight brush fire in Salem as dry and windy conditions have raised the risk of wildfires in southern New England.

A Massachusetts State Police trooper found a woman dead amid a brush fire Saturday night, according to the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

MILLBURY — A small brush fire that was believed to have originated in an encampment left one woman dead Saturday night, authorities said. The following comes from a news release from the Department of Fire Services:

A woman is dead after a brush fire in Millbury on Saturday night. Around 8:20 p.m. troopers responded to a small brush fire in the area of the Blackstone River Bikeway near Route 146, the State Fire Marshall said.

State police said that the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but fire officials pointed out that Massachusetts has been under an ongoing elevated fire risk.
