US Marines who are part of a military deployment ordered by President Donald Trump have arrived at the Wilshire Federal Building in Los Angeles, positioning them miles away from the areas where protests spurred by immigration raids have taken place.

Trump issued a memo to deploy troops to areas where protests are occurring or "likely to occur," which may allow forces to operate in other cities.

This week marks a jarring collision of the military and civilian relationship, one that has traditionally remained carefully apolitical. It's a week bookended by two high-profile events, both steeped in Trump-era symbolism.

The Trump administration argued in federal court that any judicial intervention to curtail its deployment of military troops to Los Angeles would endanger federal immigration agents and undermine the president's authority to keep American cities safe.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said President Donald Trump is “pulling a military dragnet” across Los Angeles during a brief public address on Tuesday.

Hegseth was met with questions and criticism Tuesday by lawmakers who pressed him about his moves to deploy troops to Los Angeles.

The deployment of the military in response to protests in Los Angeles echoes the overreach we have seen for over 50 years in Latin America.

Sen. Jack Reed brought up the situation in Los Angeles and questioned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about the administration's use of National Guardsmen and Marines to deal with the protests.
